When a customer approached us for machining a steel drive nut, the main challenge was managing a particularly complex left-hand thread.
In left-hand threading operations, the tool geometry must closely match both the component’s features and the required tolerances. When this balance is missing, even a single operation can compromise the precision of the entire part.
To overcome this issue and optimize the cycle time, our IG Utensili technical team designed and manufactured a dedicated solution: a single tool capable of performing three operations.
Key Strengths of Our Solution
Starting from the specific requirements of the component and the required thread, we developed a 4-flute solid carbide thread mill with a left-hand helix and a TNF coating.
The tool profile was ground to spec to execute the guide diameter, relief groove, and thread in a single pass, integrating the various machining needs into one geometry.
This dedicated solution ensured smooth chip removal and correct profiling, overcoming the critical issues experienced with previously used tools.
